Corporal Ian Roderick Morrill, the Royal Green Jackets

August 28, 2020

Remembering the Fallen:  on this day in 1972, Corporal Ian Roderick Morrill, the Royal Green Jackets, was killed in Northern Ireland.

On the day of his death he had been on foot patrol in the Beechmount area of Belfast.  He was hit by a single bullet which appeared to have been fired from a nearby bakery – his colleagues returned fire but to no avail.

Corporal Morrill lies buried in the Shrewsbury general cemetery in Shropshire, and on his headstone are the words, “Tranquil you lie, Ian, your knightly virtue proved.”

Ian, from Southend, was 29 years old.
