Remembering the Fallen:  on this day in 1988, Warrant Officer Class 2 John Robert Howard, 321 EOD, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, was killed in Northern Ireland.

WO2 Howard, who had been an instructor at the Army School of Ammunition, had also served in Northern Ireland in 1981, and was the first member of the bomb squad to be killed since then.  In 1989 he would be Mentioned in Despatches for his service.

On the day of his death his team had arrived at the Falls Baths on the Falls Road in Belfast, the scene of an earlier explosion in which two civilians had died.  It was during this follow-up examination that WO2 Howard triggered a booby-trap bomb and was killed.  He lies buried in the Burton Dassett cemetery in Warwickshire.

John, born in Perivale in Middlesex, was 29 years old and married.
