Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 1973, Private Michael John Murtagh, 1st Battalion, the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment, was killed in Northern Ireland.
On the day of his death he was the gunner inside a Saracen armoured car which was travelling along Servia Street in the Lower Falls area of Belfast. The turret of the vehicle was hit by a rocket fired from nearby waste ground. Private Murtagh sustained grievous head wounds and died less than an hour later at the Royal Victoria Hospital, to which the driver of the vehicle, although also injured, had taken him. Three other soldiers were slightly injured. He lies buried in the Pleasington Cemetery in Blackburn, Lancashire.
Michael, from Blackburn, was 23 years old and was newly married.
