Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 1982, Private Colin Phillip Clifford, the Drums Platoon, 1st Battalion, the Royal Hampshire Regiment, was killed in Northern Ireland.
He was part of an eight-man foot patrol in the Meenatulla area of County Fermanagh, near Belleek. He died when a thousand-pound culvert bomb was detonated from across the border, only two hundred yards away. Private Clifford is buried in St. John’s Parochial Cemetery in Jersey; there is a brass and oak memorial plaque in his honour in the St. Mary in Castro Church in the grounds of Dover Castle in Kent.
Colin, from Jersey, was 21 years old.
