Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 1978, Rifleman Nicholas Smith, 2nd Battalion, Royal Green Jackets, died in Northern Ireland. He had been attempting to remove a tri-colour flag from a pole near a parochial house in Crossmaglen, County Armagh, when he was killed by a booby-trap bomb. He and another soldier had inspected the pole, to which the flag was nailed along with a piece of wood, but did not detect any wires nor anything resembling an explosive device. The soldier with him was injured but recovered. Nicholas, from Battersea, was 20 years old.
