Private Stephen Alexander Carleton, 9th County Antrim Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment

Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 1982, Private Stephen Alexander Carleton, 9th County Antrim Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment, was killed in Northern Ireland.

He was a part-time soldier in the regiment, and had just begun a new job as manager of a filling station on the Antrim Road in North Belfast. On the day of his death, two masked gunmen forced their way into a family’s home - one gunman held the family captive while the other took their car to use in the killing. At nine o’clock in the morning, just as he arrived for work, Private Carleton was shot several times and died within an hour. He had been in the regiment for three months.

Stephen, from Carrickfergus, was 24 years old and married with one child.
