Serjeant Phillip Scott, 3rd Battalion, The Rifles

Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 2009, Serjeant Phillip Scott of 3rd Battalion The Rifles, was killed in Afghanistan. He was caught up in an IED explosion during a clearance operation by his platoon in the town of Sangin.

A gamekeeper’s son, he joined the army in 2001, serving in Northern Ireland and Iraq before being deployed to Afghanistan along with his brother, a Platoon Serjeant in A Company. He aspired to pass Special Forces selection on his return. Considered a natural soldier, he is remembered as being well-liked and respected, excelling at everything, a fit and robust career soldier with infinite potential.

Lieutenant Colonel Nick Kitson said: "Serjeant Scott was the most professional of soldiers, the toughest of men and the gentlest of friends. Naturally charming and disarmingly polite, he was considerate and compassionate to his core. Uncompromisingly assiduous at work, he was an inspiration to all and a mentor to those he led in training and on the field of battle. This Battle Group has lost one of its best junior commanders. He died doing the job he loved and we are tremendously proud of his dedication and contribution."

Phillip, from Malton in North Yorkshire, was 30 years old and married with a three-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son.
