Flight Lieutenant Geraint Roberts, 230 Squadron RAF, and Flight Lieutenant Alan Scott, 33 Squadron R

Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 2015, Flight Lieutenant Geraint Roberts, 230 Squadron Royal Air Force, and Flight Lieutenant Alan Scott, 33 Squadron Royal Air Force, died in Afghanistan following a helicopter crash in Kabul. An MoD spokesman said the crash was an accident and not the result of insurgent activity. An Afghan security guard witnessed the incident and told AP that the helicopter appeared to strike the cable of an observation balloon as it landed, that the cable was turned around the helicopter rotor and then it went down. Flight Lieutenant Roberts had also served in Bosnia, the Falkland Islands and Iraq. His C.O. said: "Flight Lieutenant Roberts was an extremely experienced, loyal and dedicated loadmaster. He joined the Puma Force just over a year ago, bringing with him over 20 years of flying experience accumulated on Chinook and Griffin helicopters which he operated as an instructor at the Defence Helicopter Flying School. He was my ‘go to’ man for all crewman issues and his honest and direct approach was always welcomed. A man with exceptionally high standards, he was never afraid to remind anyone when he felt they could have done better. However, this advice was always delivered with his characteristic wry smile and good humour. The Support Helicopter Force has lost not only an outstanding operator but a good friend to so many. Roly was instrumental in the preparation of the Squadron for Operations TORAL and his lasting legacy will be the professionalism and courage he passed onto all who flew with him." Geraint, from North Wales, was 44 years old and married with two children.
