Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 1915, Lieutenant William Gainer Marshall, 1st Brigade, 46th Division, Royal Field Artillery, was killed in action on the Western Front. At the outbreak of the Great War he left his father’s business and took a commission in the Royal Field Artillery, leaving for France towards the end of the year as part of the much-needed reinforcement. He was present at the Second Battle of Ypres, which was fought from 22nd April to 25th May, 1915, and saw the first mass use by the Germans of poison gas on the Western Front. He was shot and killed by a sniper whilst manning an observation post and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. William, from Grimsby, was 29 years old.
