Remembering the Fallen: on this day in 2007, Lance Corporal Paul Sandford from 1st Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters, was killed in Afghanistan. He had been taking part in an offensive patrol with his company attempting to clear a Taliban compound when they came under fire and he was shot and fatally wounded. Lance Corporal Sandford had joined up as a junior soldier, and had served once before in Afghanistan as well as Northern Ireland. He is remembered as brave and well-respected. His commanding officer paid this tribute: "His intelligence, courage and confident leadership were apparent to all who met him. Already selected for promotion, LCpl Sandford was in the top of his peer group and had a bright future. He showed his professionalism, grit and determination not just on the battlefield but also whilst boxing for B Coy. He was a robust and enthusiastic figure, who befittingly used his JNCO qualities to assist his team in their fitness and technical preparation. He was an example to all, exuding confidence, courage and determination." Paul, from Nottingham, was 23 years old and had just celebrated his first wedding anniversary.
